Россия, Санкт-Петербург
Section of the Italian Pond embankment, Kronstadt

River Barrier: Italian Pond

Year of creation: 1717-1727

Architect: Giovanni Fontana

Engineers: Edward Lane

Length: 442,5 m

The Italian Pond in Kronstadt was created in the first quarter of the 18th century in 1717–1727 (by the construction engineer Captain Edward Lane and architect Giovanni Fontana).

The pond gets its name from the nearby Italian Palace built for Prince Alexander Menshikov.

A short canal connects the pond with the Kupecheskaya Harbor where merchant ships spent winters. A Dutch kitchen building for cooking for sailors was built on the strip of land connecting the Italian Pond and the Harbor in the early 19th century. Today, the building houses the Museum of the model of the Kronstadt forts.

Since July 31, 2017, the section of the pond embankment has been managed by Mostotrest State-Financed Entity of St. Petersburg. The length of the section is 442.5 m and its total area is 1,242 sq. m.

In September–December 2013, the embankment was renovated. Decree of the Government of Russia dated July 10, 2001 has declared it a cultural heritage site of federal significance.
