Serny Island is situated at the Neva River delta. It acquired its name in the 19th century when it was home to warehouses used to store lime and sulfur. It was also then when a wooden bridge to the island was first constructed.

The current reinforced concrete bridge was built to the design of GUP Lengiproinzhproekt in 2018.  On June 18, 2019, the crossing was named “Serny” (Sulfur) after the same-named island.
